Muzułmanie żyją w Europie od setek lat, a kontakty międzykulturowe Starego Kontynentu i świata islamu świata islamu wpływają na europejską/zachodnią kulturę, filozofię czy naukę niemal od narodzin islamu w VII w n.e. Zarówno historia, jak i współczesność dostarczają niezwykle ciekawych materiałów do badań, zarówno stricte religioznawczych, jak i na pograniczu różnych tradycji metodologicznych.

Współcześnie muzułmanie w wielu krajach Europy Zachodniej stanowią istotny odsetek obywateli, a zagadnienia ich integracji, asymilacji, akulturacji czy procesów związanych z powstawaniem ich odrębnej tożsamości oraz religijność wyznaczają stosunkowe nowe pola badawcze zarówno przy omawianiu tradycji, jak i czasów najnowszych.

Muslims have been living in Europe for hundreds of years, and intercultural contacts between the Old Continent and the Islamic world have influenced European/Western culture, philosophy or science almost since the birth of Islam in the seventh century AD. Both history and the present day provide extremely interesting material for research, both strictly in religious studies and on the intersection between different methodological traditions

Currently, Muslims make up a significant percentage of the population in many Western European countries, and issues relating to their integration, assimilation, acculturation or processes associated with the emergence of their distinct identity and religiosity mark relatively new fields of research both when discussing tradition and recent times.
